“Broadly offensive” Casinos? Economy in danger?

About Official Linden Blog » Blog Archive Wagering In Second Life: New Policy «

I’m not in wagering, maybe just a xploder some days, but again this is becoming “Their world, their imagination…” :-(

About the Linden Lab’s post i have some doubts: is camping considered wagering, or is considered a job? This is only one doubt, but just like in the “Broadly offensive” LL’s post the message is too general and i’m sure hundreds of residents will have hundreds of questions.

Anyway, i’m not sure if Linden Lab did foresee the economical consequences inworld, gambling is part of the economical system, like it or not. Through Vint Falken’s blog (thanks, Vint) i found what Lestat posted in VTOR about the most interesting part about all this: “What will happen to the value of the L$ ? What will happen to the value of the land?” now the casino owners will not have a reason to keep their L$ and land.

Not only this, this “world of freedom” is becoming a “world of US laws” even most of residents are not US nationals or residents IRL. What will be next? Pay VAT in the inworld transactions? (oops, i think i’m giving ideas…)

I’d like to do two suggestions:

  1. Linden Lab should move their servers to a petrol platform in international waters.
  2. or give the possibility to residents of having their own servers (with some open server program, as Ajax Life, this will be easier), following then the laws of each country where the server is (just as the WWW).

Just as final words, i don’t like restrictions, Second Life was a wonderful world without them, although the bad things. Sad times are coming, not only for Second Life.

UPDATE (Jul, 27th): After talking with some people i realized maybe i’m too sensitive about all prohibitions after the “Broadly offensive” Linden post. Surely i’m mixing legal questions with moral ones. Gambling would be a legal problem for LL. You know, is just i don’t like prohibitions. :-)

  • BTW, AjaxLife is not a server, it is just a web client to SL.
Legal and moral problems sometimes do collide, but that doesn’t make LL stand straight in this case. It really becomes “Your world, Our restrictions”.

  • Thanks, Dandellion, for the info :-) i heard there is a project for a “open server” (maybe OpenSim) and had some confussion.

  • Yup, there is a project for open server and it is called the open sim…. and it is not the same as Linden’s plands for opening their server software which also exists but nobody knows when it will happen, and what will happen once they make that move.
