Exploring the metaverses

New in the city, originally uploaded by Raul Crimson.

Yes, I cheated on Linden Lab. But was one of this moments when someone cheats on his partner just to discover that he loves him/her deeply in despite of all the bad moments. ;-)

After some stupid days of lag, crashes and assets server problems i decided to explore other “virtual worlds” to see how they are. I have a limitation, just a few of this metaverses work with Mac, the most similar to Second Life, There, works just on Windows.

Between the limited selection available i decided to try vSide (still in beta, well, in alpha for Mac), and i found it… how to say it?… interesting. vSide is focused in social and music side, the lag is really low and the frame rate is quite high, even having a lot of people in one server (more than 100 avatars), there is music playing all around. There are three regions (servers) for the moment, all three full of shops, clubs, places to chill with friends. In the regions there are also “apartments”, you can “rent” them for free and organize a private (or opened to all) party. This apartments are available to the first who arrives and become “free” again once the “renter” leaves or logs off. You can modify the furniture of this apartments inside some limitations. There are some other nice features but…

If you want to find a place for creation don’t go to vSide. You can’t create nothing there, absolutely nothing. The “regions” are as they are, no building or creation possible (a good way to keep lag low, but also a big limitation). Absolutely all you can see (clothes, buildings, animations, etc…) is created by Doppleganger, Inc. the developers and owners of vSide. To make your avatar you have to choose between the (limited) possibilities and, in theory, you can’t use an avatar of other gender (it depends on the RL gender you say you are). You have to buy all new clothes and apparel in the stores around with a “local currency” and all is quite expensive, all the stores are owned by Doppleganger so no possible competition (maybe they should let Anshe Chung visit them ;-) ).

Furthermore all is quite childish, nudity is not possible (not only is not allowed, is impossible to make your avatar fully naked) and cyber is strictly forbidden (not kidding, the TOS says you can be permanently banned for cybering). Of course they control all content because you can’t create or upload nothing. So if you have children now you know is a safe environment for them, but quite limited for an adult. Anyway is not a bad place to hang sometimes and have fun with people and listen music.

I love Second Life, the possibilities are almost infinite, but i needed to go out and see what’s around to keep loving it. Anyway Linden Lab should work more in the main problems, stability and performance. They are losing some of the “beloved” corporations (AOL and Pontiac have decided to close their sims in SL and Coca-Cola have just opened one in There, main SL competitor), maybe this will be the only way that they finally react, if they don’t listen the residents sure they will listen to the corporations.

Femenine

Relax, originally uploaded by Raul Crimson.

Yesterday i spent some time wearing my female avatar to take some pics with my friend Khamudy. After finishing the session i met Silverdrake, she asked me to keep wearing this avatar and we started an interesting chat about the feelings when you wear an avatar of a different gender than yours. Here are some thoughts.

Personally I think “my girl” looks quite nice, worked on that avatar to make it look as i’d like it to look. All the avatars are expressions of ourselves, this also, but was a unconscious ellection, not planned, just saw things i liked for this avatar (clothes, hair, …) and all went together quite right.

I presume this avatar is a expression of my femenine side, or a expression of my inner image of woman as a concept. Maybe because my sexual orientation i have a concept of woman quite different that the concept of most heterosexual men have. I see the sensual part of a woman more than the sexual one. And maybe i imagine a woman more sophisticated than that concept mentioned before.

Another curious thing, when i wear a female avatar i have the tendence to be less naughty. Yes, i control my jokes, don’t know why. Silverdrake has the inverse experience, when she wears a male avatar he becomes much more naughty (if this is possible).

OMG!!! The Service Quality Metrics!!!

Yesterday, Meta Linden posted the Service Quality Metrics of November 2007 in a post in the Official Linden Blog. Meta did an analysis of the data (not really self-critic), but i’d like to do mine. Of course, i’m not an expert in networked systems, just a customer of Linden Lab, but even being just this i think i can have my opinion (or maybe because i’m this, someone who pays Linden Lab).

Let’s see first some of this SQM graphs by Linden Lab:

Second Life Service Outage Graph

Second Life Percentage of Viewer Sessions Sessions Graph

First, i’d like to comment the Outage Graph, the first one.

Since the start of the Het-Grid project the planned outage is getting down (good thing) but the unplanned one is getting really high, specially in July, August and November. With unplanned time loss percentage arriving sometimes to almost 2% i think this Het-Grid is not working as good as it was supposed to work. It seems more than Linden Lab is replacing Planned for Unplanned outage. And this is BAD!

About the second graph, the Viewer Sessions Crashed one. As you can see the percentage of Viewer Session Crashed is… OMFG!!! from 21 to 24%!!!! so almost 1/4 of the started sessions crash!!!! (well, not far from reality, 1/4 of my sessions crash normally)

Is Second Life a Beta??? Well with this level of crashes it seems a Beta. I presume this graph talks about the “normal” viewer, not the First Look Windlight or the Havoc Beta one (is quite normal this other viewers crash, they are clearly beta releases).

Linden Lab is getting better on some things like communication with the residents (specially good communication about the “Quick Time Exploid” problem), but they need to work in stability and performance more, much more.

I tink i hear santa???

10 small differences

Some days ago in Rezzed.net (the new social network for Second Life) Luc Aubert proposed a new meme about Ten differences between our Second Life and our Real Life. This was my answer:

Ok, i’m not a super fan of memes, well, most of the times, but i think is a good way to know each other. So here i am…

  1. My eyes are not so green in RL, some colour between green and brown actually.
  2. My hair in RL is black, with a lot of white hair, in SL is mainly dark, but i have some like 30 different hairs in SL, so sometimes red, sometimes blue…
  3. I would never wear in RL some of the things i wear in SL, i find the freedom in SL to play with clothes much more than in RL.
  4. Different jobs, in SL i’m a furniture designer and builder and a photographer, in RL i’m a travel advisor for a big company.
  5. My SL avatar lives in a nice house, surrounded by wonderful beaches. My RL avatar lives in an apartment… but near some wonderful beaches also.
  6. The second name is, of course, different. The first name is the same.
  7. My SL avatar can teleport himself, to fly and such wonderful things… my RL one not :-( what confirms what i always thought, RL has wonderful no lag sims, with a great frame rate, but the avatar edition tools and the physics are a bit hard sometimes.
  8. My SL avatar loves dark and dangerous places sometimes, my RL no, maybe because in RL is impossible to relog.
  9. In SL i LOVE to build furniture… in RL is hard the day after Ikea.
  10. Even being hairy in SL most of the days i’m much more hairy in RL.
