SLArt, SL art, just art…or whatever…
Jan 31st
Lately the word “art”is being a protagonist in Second Life and some related blogs and web-pages (as Flickr).
My friend Ganymedes Costagravas told me someone has contacted him because he was using the tag SLart in his pictures in Flickr. That person has registered the word “SLart” and he was asking him to take off all the tags!!!
Vint Falken wrote a really interested post about this stuff. I’m still surprised someone “trademarked” a work like that, first, I think SL is a trademark of Linden Labs, second, is a word of common use in Second Life.
Talking about the common use… I used the image above (with permission of the creator, Nebulosus Severine) to illustrate a bit that question. Is SLphotography Art? , the big question…
Art is a really open concept (SLart is maybe even more open) so the only think I can do (as everybody) is to give my opinion. Just some SLphotography is art, as just some RLphotography is, exactly the same as any kind of creation, some buildings in SL are art, most are not. What makes something art is not the tool or the technique, is the intention, the talent and the meaning, the expression of beauty (of any kind, not always the “mainstream” beauty), of fears, loves, hates, feelings and thoughts.
I’m not pretending to be an artist, I just enjoy using some tools to create things (images, objects, …) and, sometimes, even express myself. Sometimes I enjoy trying to create images that may push people’s mind, sometimes I’m just having fun. And I don’t need to be an artist to do all that.
About the use and abuse of the word Art. I don’t consider, personally, Art something beautiful, well done, but totally empty. Maybe is here where i find the abuse of the word, some people call themselves “artist” just because they have good (even great) skills using a tool to create something beautiful, but what is behind? some meaning? some feeling apart of the sense of beauty? For me this people are craftsmen (or craftswomen), but artists?
As always I’d like to say this is my opinion and I can be wrong, everyone is free to call oneself whatever one wants in the same way I’m free to express what i think. (I know this is a boring “disclaimer” but i don’t want nobody to misunderstand me)

Working hard, hard… HARD!!!
This is the image for the invite of the party, sure most of you have recieved it. If not, I’m really sorry, that’s why I’m posting this.

This is Amantha, my daemon
Jan 23rd

Reading an interesting post by Looker Loomet about how small can the metaverse be i found he posted “his daemon”.
A deamon is a character of “The Golden Compass”, a movie based on a book called “Northern Lights” by Philip Pullman. Is an animal, an expression and a part of the owner’s soul.
After answering some questions in the film’s web they say this is “my daemon”. An ocelot, outgoing, spontaneous, modest, inquisitive and fickle…
I think is not a bad definition, but i’m sure i’m not really objective about it… what do you think?
Mardi Gras at The Maze of the Queen of Hearts party
Jan 21st
Mardi Gras is so near, next Feb 5th, and is time to party!!!
So next Sunday, Feb 3rd, noon SLT i’ll have a BIG party… Mardy Gras at The Maze of the Queen of Hearts!!!
This last week i was building a topiary maze (thanks to Soldeus Stygian for his help, he is the creator of the sculpted walls and topiary details). I’m still working on it, building the dance floor, adding details, hidden corners with romantic poses, and some surprises…
So, you know, look for your “Alice in Wonderland” (or whatever) costume and have fun!
Soon more info, name of the DJ, SLurl, etc…
Paradise is so near…
Jan 16th
I’m a bit old in Second Life (more than a year) and still is so wonderful to discover great places, fantastic corners of the metaverse.
A couple of days ago Silverdrake, Ganymedes and me were trying to find a rainforest for a Silver’s project, after running over a couple sims I suggested to visit one sim i know (I remembered that there were a rainforest area, but didn’t visited it before). After flying over the sim I found a wondeful corner, with a river in the middle of the forest, a lot of plants, a cascade…
After some minutes we teleported there some good friends and
stayed there for a long time, enjoying the place. Was like a picnic day with friends, enjoying each other company, relaxing. Even is possible to rezz objects there so was possible to have some nice poseballs and a couple of rafts.
The sensation was like when you find a virgin beach, really beautiful, and there is nobody there, was so nice to have this sensation still…
Not only nice virtual nature places, also art…
Soldeus shown me a HUGE enviromental instalation he found in a sim called Otona Sea. Is, possibly, one of the most interesting artworks i saw in Second Life.
Is some like a giant sphere, with animated prims and textures everywhere, quite organic feeling. Someway it remembered me Dune (maybe because some “worms” that are moving (living?) there).
The creator is Juria Yoshikawa, you can visit the place following this SLurl. It really worths a visit.
Some images of that artwork here:
A day in vSide
Jan 15th
I’m still exploring sometimes that metaverse, vSide. Some days ago I told you a bit about it in other post.
I made this machinima, just for fun and explore the possibilities. Anyway, even the frame rate goes down a bit when using the “movie capturer” I think it looks pretty acceptable.
As I said vSide is more social orientated and completly PG. People is quite nice there, always ready to dance with you and have some fun.
You can find more images of this metaverse in the vSide main page in Koinup.
